Dr. K.M.
Cherian
A modest building, an attractive
frontage and a wealth of knowledge pulsates
at the Dr. K. M. Cherian Heart Foundation
& the Frontier Lifeline that takes one
to the heart of the matter. Gifted with
compassion, passion, humanitarianism and
an awesome sense of dedication, Padmashree
Dr. K. M. Cherian leads a skilled and carefully
orchestrated team to empower and resuscitate
the core of life.
Pioneering pediatric cardiac surgery in
India, this leading cardiac surgeon has
held prestigious positions in India and
abroad. Dr. K. M. Cherian has been the Honorary
Surgeon to the President of India from 1990
to 1993 and has performed more than 27,000
operations. With innate talent and a passion
to save lives, he has also pioneered the
first heart transplant in India after the
legislation of Brain Death, the first bilateral
lung transplant, the first Pediatric Heart
transplant, the first Auto transplant, and
the first Heart and Lung transplant. With
phenomenal experience and far-sightedness,
he is the first and only Indian member of
the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
With prestigious awards
and prominent accolades bestowed on Dr.
K. M. Cherian and his long and sincere work
of dedication, his earnest efforts to save
lives, has brought him to the forefront.
The President of India in his appeal to
the Iraqi abductors, who had kidnapped three
Indians, cited Dr. K. M. Cherian’s
humanitarian gesture of operating on 20
Iraqi children who came with complex congenital
heart defects in March the same year at
the Frontier Lifeline, Chennai.
Dr. K. M. Cherian was the
recipient of the prestigious Doctor of Science
(Honoris Causa) degree, awarded by King
George’s Medical University, Lucknow
during its 3rd Convocation. This honor was
bestowed on him by His Excellency, the Governor
of Uttar Pradesh and Honorable Chancellor
of the University, Shri T.V. Rajeswar on
the 22nd of January, 2007, in recognition
of his unsurpassed contributions to cardiac
care. King George’s Medical University
is India’s fifth biggest medical university
with the unique distinction of being the
first residential Medical University in
the country. This pioneer institution prides
itself on producing some of our finest and
most esteemed doctors and surgeons.
The International Centre
for Cardiothoracic and Vascular Diseases
started by Frontier Lifeline is yet another
brainchild of the prodigious Dr. K. M. Cherian.
